TL;DR (Too Long Didn’t Read)? 1. Large Item Pickup has been postponed, and 2. No extra bags outside of the regular trash bins for the time being.
Please read on…
This has been on social media, but I wanted to send out here, too, just in case you don’t follow the City’s or my social media. Even if you do, it may be getting lost in ALL of the notifications out there right now.
**I’m also going to put this information here again, so it doesn’t get lost at the bottom: To get timely and urgent information from the City and/or County, especially now, please sign up for NotifyJoCo (click Register Now) AND City of Prairie Village emails (you can select the topics you want to be notified about).
So, two things:
1. Large Item Pickup has been Postponed!

The large item pickup originally scheduled for March 28 & April 4 has been postponed.
The new tentative dates for this year’s collection are:
June 6 – Residents on and north of 75th Street and those east of Belinder
June 13 – Residents south of 75th Street, except those east of Belinder
As always, Items must be at the curb by 7:00 a.m.
Items collected include:
- Appliances
- Railroad ties (4’ or less in length)
- Fencing (cut into 3’ x 4’ sections. Bundle loose pickets for easy collection.)
- Furniture
- Carpet (cut into 4’ x 4’ sections)
- Items not collected by regular trash service
Items should be no larger than a standard-size refrigerator. Republic will pick up refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and ice makers; however, the refrigerant must be removed. Loose items should be bundled. For complete large item pick-up rules visit www.pvkansas.com/largeitempickup.
If you have additional questions, call Republic Services at 913-281-4343. This is a free service for Prairie Village residents.
2. No extra bags outside of the regular trash bins for the time being.

For residents who repeatedly have extra trash bags outside of the container, Republic has agreed to deliver them a second cart for a nominal annual fee.
To request this, you can call Republic at 816-521-3110 or email customerkc@republicservices.com.
The cost for an extra cart is $35 for the entire year ($.0.67 per week) and they will have to pay Republic directly with a credit card over the phone.
This is actually a much better deal for residents who regularly have extra trash, as you currently pay $1 per bag.
There have been a lot more communications from the City over the last two+ weeks. I haven’t written anything about it, yet, because I didn’t want to inundate everyone with duplicate information.
Definitely please consider signing up for the two services I recommended at the top. Neither of them sends too many messages.
And please stay socially distanced, stay healthy, and enjoy this time of slower enjoyment of life and our friends and families.
